The Importance of Proper Form & Technique

ree

We know that exercising is good for us. Good for our bodies and minds. If we are not using the proper form then it could be negating some of those benefits.

When it comes to exercise, technique is your plan of action, you are doing this exercise to target these muscles in order to build strength.

Example: I do floor bridges in order to increase hip mobility and strengthen my hamstrings.

When we think about form that is all about your how. How are you actually moving your body throughout an exercise.

Example: (For floor bridge) My back is flat on the ground, my pelvis is tucked, my feet are on the ground and I slowly reach my hips up to the sky while my back and feet stay where they are.

Knowing proper form of an exercise is essential in decreasing your risk of injury and increasing your ability level. One caveat, is that sometimes we have body limitations. Notoriously, squats are better the lower you can go, due to a knee injury I have I never get close to the ‘proper’ level. So, yes knowing form is important to not hurt yourself, but it’s essential to know your own body’s limitations and why they are there.

What things could be contributing to improper form

  • Rushing through a workout - you are not taking the time to pay attention to what your body is doing

  • Not using stabilization throughout an exercise/workout - typically this is referring to engaging your core

    • I think about tucking my butt in, and working to keep it there, maybe even tensing like something is about to hit you in the stomach.

  • Not using full range of motion - being able to move in the full range of motion gives you the opportunity to increase strength

  • Poor posture or alignment - this typically comes from not knowing what your posture or alignment looks like and how to alter it to better suit the exercise

Improper technique and form can lead to you not liking to work out and making you want to do it less regularly. When addressing improper form it’s essential to be consistent with it. It has become your body’s normal form when doing the exercise, it takes time to combat that.

Focusing on mobility can be a great way to address problem areas with your form. Once you start focusing on improving your form you’ll notice an increased focus on target muscle groups and better optimization of your time when working out.

Some tips when addressing form:

  • Seek guidance - from those around you, fitness professionals

  • Research - what proper form even looks like

  • Use a mirror and/or video so see what you look like doing the movements.

  • Proprioception - being aware of the space your body is taking up in relation to the things around you.

  • Use proper equipment
