What Do You Do When Motivation Fails?

ree

You know how it goes. You get this need and desire to make a change, you feel ready and amped, you feel motivated to tackle your goals. That carries you for a little bit, maybe even for awhile. Then the inevitable happens; you don’t want to workout, you don’t feel like doing this, you’ll do that later.

It happens to us all, our motivation wanes. Well, what do we do when that happens?

There are a few strategies. Building a base of consistency can be indispensable when it comes to the success/completion of an exercise program. Once we become consistent there is less friction when it comes to engaging in that behavior. You are able to see improvement when you do something over and over, it helps you stay focused.

Getting to a ‘consistent’ level can take time, though. What do you do in the meantime?

A lot of articles and fitness gurus will tell you it’s all about discipline. Just be more disciplined, which yes, is great but what does that look like?

Here are some tips for sticking with it, that way when motivation wanes it doesn't feel like it completely derails you:

  • Set goals - there is some kind of finish line in mind. Make sure it’s realistic, always helpful to have smaller ones along the way as well

  • Make it fun - working out shouldn’t feel like a punishment

  • Reward yourself - its proven to help keep you motivated and moving towards your goal

  • Acknowledge where you are - it’s helpful to also acknowledge the gap between where you are and where you want to be. What’s missing?

  • Be flexible - life happens

  • Do what feels best for you - body and mind

  • Give your workouts meaning - what is your why?

There can be several barriers to exercise both physical and mental. It’s ok, if you don’t have motivation to go all out, right now, meet yourself where you’re at.

Whatever that looks like.
