How To Find a Workout Plan That Works For You

At the beginning of the year many of us feel motivated or pressured to start a new workout program. There is no shortage of them out there, both payed and free, but which one should you choose? You shouldn't have to suffer through decision fatigue in order to find a program that works for you.

So, what are things to keep in mind when searching for a new workout plan?

Experience level: Are you a beginner just starting out? Wanting to increase your activity level a little bit? Are you seasoned and just looking for a change of pace and scenery?

It’s important to look at who the programs are designed for. For the general public, stay away from programs that are catered for power/bodybuilders and athletes.

Fads: It’s almost hard to keep up with the speed of fads within the fitness community. They can be a great way to discover new things, but doing something because everyone else is doing it will not be the most helpful in the long run to reaching your goals.

Goals: Do you want to be able to walk/run more, lift weights, or just increase your general physical activity level? If you want to start running more, a high intensity strength training program will not translate to your goal.

Lifestyle: How much time and how many days of the week do you have to dedicate to a workout? What resources do you have access too?

Common types of strength training plans:

  • Full body

  • Upper body and lower body split (4 day)

  • Push pull legs (3 days)

  • Classic body part splits

*If you're interested in building your own strength training program I put together a guide on how to do that here.

Examples of cardio plans:

  • Running/Jogging/Walking

  • HIIT workouts

  • Swimming

  • Cycling

Once you choose a program you do not need to commit 100%. You can try it out, see if it works for you and go from there.

If you want extra help determining what would make a good workout plan for you, don't hesitate to reach out.
